Wildlife Along the Angus Coast: Nature Around Seaton Estate

One of the things many people quickly fall in love with when they visit Seaton Estate near Arbroath is the incredible natural beauty of the surrounding coastline. The Angus coast is known for its dramatic cliffs, fresh sea air and sweeping views across the North Sea, but it’s also home to an impressive variety of wildlife.

For residents and visitors alike, it’s not unusual to see birds soaring over the cliffs, seals resting along the shoreline, or even dolphins swimming just offshore. For anyone who enjoys nature, living close to this stretch of coastline offers a daily connection with the natural world.

Marine Life Along the Angus Coast

The waters along the Angus coastline support a surprisingly rich marine ecosystem. One of the most exciting sights for many people walking the coastal paths around Arbroath is the occasional appearance of bottlenose dolphins.

These intelligent and playful marine mammals are sometimes spotted travelling along the coastline in small groups, particularly during calmer sea conditions.

The coastline is also home to harbour seals and grey seals, which can often be seen resting on rocks or swimming just offshore. Seals are curious animals and will sometimes lift their heads above the water to watch walkers along the cliffs.

At certain times of the year, you may also spot harbour porpoises, smaller relatives of dolphins that quietly move through the coastal waters.

Seeing these animals in their natural habitat is one of the many special experiences that comes with spending time along the Angus coast.

Birdlife and Seabirds

The cliffs and shoreline around Arbroath and the Angus coast are also home to an incredible variety of seabirds.

During the spring and summer months, the cliffs become busy nesting grounds for species such as:

  • Kittiwakes

  • Guillemots

  • Razorbills

  • Gannets

  • Cormorants

  • Shags

Watching these birds glide along the cliff edges or dive into the sea for fish is a fascinating sight and a reminder of how vibrant the local ecosystem is.

During the winter months, different species appear along the shoreline, including eider ducks and other sea ducks that gather in sheltered waters.

Closer to the park itself, it’s common to hear and see oystercatchers, curlews and gulls, whose distinctive calls are part of the everyday sound of coastal life.

A Peaceful Park Full of Birdsong

While the surrounding coastline and countryside provide incredible wildlife opportunities, the park itself is also a surprisingly peaceful haven for birds and nature.

Because Seaton Estate is a quiet park with plenty of green space and mature planting, residents often notice a wide range of birds visiting the area throughout the day.

One of our owners recently used a bird identification app while sitting outside their lodge and was amazed by the variety of birds the app detected around the park. In just a short period of time it identified species including:

  • Song Thrush

  • European Goldfinch

  • Eurasian Blue Tit

  • Great Tit

  • European Robin

  • Eurasian Linnet

  • Common Wood Pigeon

For many residents, sitting outside on a calm morning and listening to birdsong has become one of the small daily pleasures of living here.

It’s another reminder that while Seaton Estate is close to the town of Arbroath, it still offers a peaceful natural environment where wildlife can thrive.
